The Ministry of Internal Affairs is proud to open a new department after years of hard work — the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning (DUAP).

The launching of the new department took place on the 28th of April, witnessed by government officials, public service workers as well as representatives from the private sector.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs now has six departments. DUAP is the outcome of many years of hard work and dedication as the idea for this department had originated in 2009, making its final achievement a momentous occasion. With more than 30% of the Vanuatu population residing in urban areas, this department will play an essential role in urban planning, to assure that urban development is sustainable and will thrive socially, economically and safely. Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Simil Johnson said it is essential to recognise the needs of all the people of Vanuatu and such is the purpose of this new development.

He congratulated the Ministry of Internal Affairs and thanked the Director General of Internal Affairs, Cherol Ala for taking up the initiative and challenge to establish DUAP.

The Director General of Internal Affairs, Cherol Ala acknowledged that the milestone achievement for the government of Vanuatu was only possible through partnership, saying the way forward for the world today is partnership and building relationships through teamwork. Deputy Prime Minister, Ishmael Kalsakau thanked all present and former staff for all their service that allowed for such an important development to materialize.

Planning is extremely important to development thus this department has an essential role to fill in the government. The new department’s sign post and newly created logo by artist Joel Moses Tallis were also unveiled. With the launching, the DUAP is ready to be of service to the people of Vanuatu.
