As part of the Greater Port Vila Urban Resilience Project, a promising new initiative-the Nature-Based Coastal Protection Pilot Project - has been proposed for Fatumaru Bay. The project represents a significant step forward in addressing coastal vulnerability through environmentally sustainable solutions.
A recent workshop held at the Port Vila City Council brought together key stakeholders to discuss the initiative in detail. The project is primarily funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and its financial partners, showcasing strong regional support for Vanuatu's climate resilience efforts.
To lead the development and implementation, Consultant Daniel Rodgers has been appointed. He is responsible for creating a clear roadmap and ensuring that the project is implemented in close coordination with local NGOs and the community.
Multiple government departments are actively involved, contributing their technical expertise to help refine the projects direction. These include the Departments of Forestry, Environment, Urban Affairs & Planning, Fisheries, and Ports and Harbor. Also engaged are the Port Vila City Council and the Shefa Provincial Government. Their collective goal: to ensure that the project delivers sustainable, community-driven outcomes.
This pilot project is a prime example of how nature-based solutions can be harnessed to protect vulnerable coastal areas, while also fostering partnerships between government, development partners, and communities.
