The Urban Planning Unit carried out a site inspection today at the newly established evacuation centers located in Korman, Seaside, and Freshwota. These centers, officially launched on 6th September 2024 by the Honorable Minister Andrew Napuat, are key projects aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and ensuring community safety during emergencies.

Funded through a partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Vanuatu, the centers are designed to provide secure, accessible shelter for residents during natural disasters such as cyclones, earthquakes, and floods.

Leading the inspection was Senior Urban Planning Officer, Ms Samantha Vinbel, accompanied by Mr. Thierry Martinet from the Engineering and Consultant Unit. Together, they assessed the construction progress of the centers to ensure the project timelines and quality standards are being met.

These evacuation centers are an important step forward in improving our natural resilience. We're working closely with our partners to ensure the facilities are completed on time and are ready to serve communities in times of need.

The Urban Planning Unit continues to monitor and support the development of infrastructure projects that enhance safety and sustainability in Vanuatu's urban areas.
