Newly elected Port Vila councillors receive a briefing on the CBD earthquake recovery and rebuild programme.

Port Vila’s newly elected councillors received a briefing on the Port Vila Central Business District earthquake recovery and rebuild programme as part of their induction in September 2026.

The presentation was delivered by Nik Regenvanu, Project Manager of the Project Management Unit (PMU) of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning (DUAP). It provided an update on the Government’s work to support recovery and longer-term redevelopment following the December 2024 earthquake.

Discussions covered the CBD Vision and Concept Plan, geotechnical guidance, roads and infrastructure, urban design, and ongoing engagement with businesses and the wider private sector.

The briefing gave councillors an opportunity to ask questions, raise issues and provide feedback on the planned redevelopment process.

Ongoing coordination between DUAP and Port Vila City Council will help connect planning, approvals, infrastructure priorities and community needs as the programme progresses.

The DUAP PMU supports coordination and facilitation of the rebuild, while PVCC retains its statutory responsibilities for planning permissions and municipal development control. DUAP looks forward to working with the new Council and other partners to support practical improvements across the CBD.
