The launch of the Port Vila CBD Vision and Concept Plan sets out a shared direction for the capital’s recovery and longer-term rebuild.

Planning and technical preparation are progressing for proposed China-Aid road upgrades in Port Vila, including road sections within and around the Central Business District (CBD) and selected roads elsewhere in the city.

The proposed project covers approximately 12.29 kilometres across 19 road sections. Planned improvements include road rehabilitation and sealing, drainage, pedestrian walkways, road markings and signage.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (MIPU) is leading and overseeing the project. The China Electronics Engineering Design Institute Co., Ltd. (CEEDI) is undertaking design and technical preparation on behalf of China-Aid.

A coordination meeting chaired by MIPU on 22 July brought together CEEDI, Port Vila City Council and the DUAP Project Management Unit to support the technical assessment and planning process.

Traffic engineering and urban design input will help the proposed designs consider pedestrian access, public transport, key intersections and connections between CBD areas. This supports the wider direction of the Port Vila CBD Vision and Concept Plan.

Construction will proceed subject to the required design, review, procurement and approval processes. The DUAP PMU is supporting coordination of the CBD component with the wider rebuild.
