Planning for proposed China-Aid road upgrades supports efforts to improve Port Vila’s road network and CBD connectivity.

Traffic engineers supporting the Port Vila CBD rebuild have completed an in-country assessment of traffic movement, pedestrian access, public transport operations and key intersections across the city centre.

During the visit, the engineers reviewed current conditions and met the Minister of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, government engineers and representatives of Port Vila City Council.

The work is being facilitated through the Project Management Unit of the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning, in close collaboration with PVCC. The PMU’s Urban Design Specialist is also providing input to connect traffic planning with the wider objectives of the CBD Vision and Concept Plan.

The assessment considers how roads, footpaths, public spaces and public transport facilities can work together. It aims to identify practical improvements that make the CBD safer, easier to access and better connected for pedestrians, public transport users, businesses and other road users.

The findings will inform planning and design for future road improvements, including the proposed China-Aid upgrades, subject to technical feasibility and the appropriate approvals.

This coordinated approach helps ensure that future improvements respond to how people use the city centre, as well as the physical condition of its roads.
